Maritime Trades Magnet
The Maritime Trades Magnet (MTM) program is a Department of Education-funded project that targets the introduction to and use of maritime-related advanced manufacturing technologies by local 10th and 11th grade students. Thirteen high schools across Hampton Roads, the New Horizons Regional Education Center, and two community centers were provided with advanced manufacturing equipment, supplies, and an online training resource to supplement their CTE class curriculums and summer programs. Equipment included 3D printers, desktop CNC machines, robotic arms, mobile robots, and embedded systems. High school CTE teachers were trained on each piece of equipment and provided with support via the MTM website created for the project. The website includes step-by-step instruction on how to use the equipment, background information on advanced manufacturing, projects designed specifically for the equipment, and career pathways for students to explore.
